Will My Patent Make Me Rich?

There seems to be a belief among the public that getting a patent is some sort of equivalent to winning the lottery–and that the money will start rolling in as soon as the patent office sends you a notice of allowance.  This just isn’t the case.  And while we would love nothing more than for everyone to share in the wealth created through patenting an invention, there is simply no guarantee that patenting an invention will make an inventor money.

Just like any investment, there are serious risks involved with patenting an invention which should be carefully considered before pursuing a patent or any other form of intellectual property legal protection.  As the old saying goes:  “Look before you leap.”  Discussing your invention and long-term strategy with a patent attorney can often save you thousands of dollars and years of hardship.
